Alone With The Poppies - Original Oil Painting

Canvas size 24x18 (overall framed size is approximately 34x28)

An early autumn day,
I’ll never forget
There amongst the poppies,
A sun starting to set

I was questioning my fate,
It had led me here
The voices in my head saying,
There’s nothing to fear

It was just weeks earlier,
A decision was made
I’d move on from one life,
With another I would trade

It definitely wasn’t easy,
But it needed to be done
Avoiding a world of chaos,
I could no longer run

My best friend forever,
And the faith she had in me
It was all that I needed,
To be who I could be

As I stood there now proud,
Looking into the skies
I noticed it forming slowly,
A phoenix did rise

With the support of just one,
My life started to change
I’d chase after my dream,
And at last turn the page

This painting started off as an experimentation (with the colors of the sunset) and slowly morphed into what you see now. I added a subtle Phoenix in the colors of the setting sun which signifies my transition into my new life as an artist, while leaving everything else behind. Saying that, this painting is very, very special to me.

Each part of the painting had its own challenges, but I wanted to give it a look of pure solitude at the end of a long day. It’s done in a heavy impasto style and was finished off with a light coating of diamond dust and varnish. The diamond dust gives off a slight, yet beautiful sparkle, even in low light. I don’t use this effect in all of my paintings, but only the ones that I feel it matches. Especially, the Phoenix in this case. I added the two large poppies on each side to give the painting more depth. These are done in a heavier style and almost appear to be growing from the canvas. Last, but not least, I used finely ground poppy seeds and mixed them with the red paint to make it even more authentic. It’s all squared off with a beautiful, black ornate frame with cocoa highlights. Note, diamond dust is not glitter, but very small pieces of glass that I’ve hidden inside of the grooves of the paint (created by the palette knife).
